Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
Part 2
If you haven’t read part 1 of my observations, please read it at your leisure. This is a continuation of the beginner’s habits that slow down or stop their English learning. Being aware of common issues that hold you back will help you avoid those problems. Please read some more of my opinions.
A few more problems
- Irregular learning routine – As I have written many times, learning a language is a marathon and not a sprint. It takes frequent practice and dedication to go a little further each time. Cramming is like a sprint; putting in a lot of energy is only good for a short time.
- One method of learning – As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life and so should your learning methods be. Group lessons, one-to-one lessons, textbooks, different media in your target language, apps, etc. Wherever possible, have a variety of learning materials.
- Ignoring the things you don’t like – We often don’t do what we don’t like but why don’t we like it? It could be that it’s difficult, boring, a weak point, or all of these! It may be possible you can ignore learning certain things but more often than not, you can’t. Difficult will become easier, boring can become interesting, and weak will become strong with better understanding.
- Use what you have learned – Real-life interactions are the greatest stress tests of what you have learned. A quote from Plato, “He who is learning and learning and doesn’t apply what he knows is like the one who is ploughing and ploughing and doesn’t seed” However, there is the joy of learning to consider.
- Giving up – There are many reasons to give up anything but ask yourself this question before you do so, “Why did I start in the first place?” This question will help you find what motivated you at first, and if it hasn’t changed, why quit?
Knowledge is power
By knowing your weaknesses when studying a foreign language, you can make simple strategies to avoid bad habits and enjoy the learning process. Having the mindset of, “Don’t think about doing it, DO IT!”, has helped me in the past; procrastination is my worst bad habit.
Almost perfect
We can’t be perfect so don’t be too hard on yourself, having said that, you can’t be too easy on yourself and expect good results.
