Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
Ears, mouth, eyes, hand
When learning any language, the key skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are introduced. These are the building blocks for not only acquiring the language but the practical parts of communication.
Although it has become rarer for illiteracy in people, it is possible to exclusively learn a language through speaking and listening, however, reading and writing supports learning and reinforces what is learnt.
Mastering all these skills are essential for effective interaction in personal, educational, and professional settings. Other skills include vocabulary, grammar, and active listening, as well as an awareness of non-verbal cues and emotional intelligence.
Core skills with their supporting skills
Listening: The ability to focus, understand, and interpret spoken language.
Knowledge of the supporting skills of active listening, non-verbal cues, and emotional intelligence are required for this core skill.
Speaking: The ability to articulate ideas and information clearly and concisely.
Knowledge of the supporting skills of vocabulary, grammar, emotional intelligence, and confidence are required for this core skill.
Reading: The ability to comprehend written text and understand different writing styles.
Knowledge of the supporting skills of vocabulary and grammar are required for this core skill.
Writing: The ability to produce clear, correct, and effective written content.
Knowledge of the supporting skills of vocabulary and grammar are required for this core skill.
Beyond the books
As you can see grammar and vocabulary are essential but they only scratch the surface of what is needed for sincere communication.
The “feel” of the language requires more knowledge including: empathy, understanding cultural differences, respect, friendliness, and connection.
The “interest” in the language requires: asking questions, vocabulary building, sharing feedback, and using appropriate language.
The “functioning” of the language requires to be: concise, correct, and formal.
From the basic tools to the profound use of English, it is a long and interesting journey.
