Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
Plan to plan
Oddly, one of my favourite things when first learning how to teach English wasn’t teaching, it was creating a lesson plan. A lesson plan, for those who don’t know, is the detailed structure of the lesson. It includes the aim of the lesson, how it will be presented, practised, and the interaction between everyone in the class, all with approximate timings. 2 minutes to get students into pairs is more than enough time, by the way.
What, Who, How
Imagine the aim of the lesson is “At the end of the class, students will be able to introduce themselves” How can I achieve this? How many people are in the class? What English level are the students? How will I present it? What learning materials would I need? How will they practice it? Who will interact with whom? Group work or individual effort? Should I make it a competitive task or a collective effort?
It’s not me, it’s you
With so many options and variables, it can be overwhelming, but ultimately, it’s the students’ ability that puts everything into focus. What can I do to help them “get it”? This is tailoring the lesson to fit the student.
What
The process also leads to another interesting aspect of the lesson plan: choosing learning materials suitable for the task and the student. If I didn’t have, or couldn’t find, materials fit for the job, I’d make them, which can be an additional enjoyable activity itself! I can create the materials that suit the student and my teaching style, very comfortable.
Who
My presentation style is similar throughout my lessons as it fits my idea of what learning should be. I think lessons should be interesting, informative, and fun, which I hope my lessons are. From 2 years old to 80+ years old, I want to hear the target English of the lesson, and laughter.
How
The parts of the lesson plan piece together to make the whole lesson, and it needs to feel seamless, like the natural flow of learning something new; the learner discovered it with our guidance. But truly, the lesson plan is worth nothing if it doesn’t work with the final piece.
More gains
The final piece of the lesson plan is the student acquiring knowledge and using it correctly. A successful lesson plan is the success of the student who gains more by using what they have learned. I think that kind of success is greater than the sum of the lesson plan’s parts.
