Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
I don’t know if it’s instinct or conditioning but looking back over previous work is good practice. Now, through writing this, I see it has become second nature to review any actions related to work. This includes the business side of what we do as well as the teaching side.
Business side
The business side, to be honest, isn’t where our interest lies; it would be great for any Japanese person who is serious about acquiring English communication skills to just turn up and ask, “Please help me.” It hasn’t happened, yet.
A modest promotion
Several years ago, we started using social media to get ourselves known, considering we are both quite private individuals, this was a huge leap. The next leap was to say how good we are at helping people with their English studies; yet another modestly uncomfortable obstacle, but it’s true.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly everything went online and our business adapted further. I’m still not a fan of the multiple formats we use to get our message out but it works and I am grateful for Masami’s help, from time to time. Always learning.
Business practice summary
So, reviewing how we promote our business, we have improved year on year online and locally, this is shown by the increasing number of students finding us in different ways.
Teaching side
Reviewing our teaching side is much easier as Masami and I always discuss how each lesson went, how it will go forward, and how we can support every student. We want to improve ourselves to better support our students too.

Our students are also part of this discussion because within the lesson they review their own progress, strengths and weaknesses, and how we can help them. Being truthful about weaknesses shows where more work needs to be done, it’s practical and not embarrassing.

- passed EIKEN, Tourism EIKEN, IELTS
- taken G-TECH and TOEIC
- gained various skills to study in an English-speaking country
- joining English Meet-Ups to chat with others in English
- communicated in English with foreign customers
- travelled overseas for work and pleasure, and used English to get by
