I previously wrote about polite and rude behaviour when interacting with other people. I also included a couple of scenarios to consider. This is something that is overlooked when learning English in Japanese Schools, awareness of cultural differences in communicating.
In Japan, sensing or anticipating what the other person is implying is common; people don’t want to be rude by addressing some subjects or situations directly. This may cause issues when dealing with non-Japanese people.
Below are a couple more scenarios to consider what is rude and polite.
Scenario 1 – Part 1
Scenario 1 – You ask someone directly if they would like to join your SNS group to keep in touch. They don’t reply yes or no. What would you do? Is it rude to ask for their answer?
Scenario 2 – Part 1
Scenario 2 – A friend immediately replies to your SNS message and you need to reply. They know you are online but you are busy with another task. What would you do? Is it rude to reply later?
Two sides to every story
The other person’s perspective could be the following.
Scenario 1 – Part 2
Scenario 1– Someone wants me to join their SNS group but I don’t want to. If I ignore it, they will understand I’m not interested. I don’t want to embarrass them by saying I’m not interested.
Scenario 2 – Part 2
Scenario 2 – I don’t like to keep people waiting for my reply so I respond as soon as possible. I usually forget to respond if I don’t do it immediately, too. I hope they appreciate my quick response.
English interaction
As stated above, what is polite in one culture can be considered rude in another. English communication isn’t just knowing words and what order to put them in; knowing when and how to interact is important too.
Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not being rude about Japanese “sensing” culture; I’m politely explaining communicating in English is different.
