The Joy of Learning (and teaching)

Awareness / アウェアネス

I’ve been helping Japanese people with their English in Japan since 2016, either by myself or with my wife Masami. Masami has been teaching English for over twenty years now, or facilitating English communication to Japanese people.

Even how we explain what we do is unconventional, as teaching would imply a conventional, teach-learn-copy-repeat, way. That is part of what we do but with additional guidance of how, what, and why to communicate.

English calling.

For Masami, teaching is her calling, she wants to share her knowledge and experiences of acquiring the language. When I hear her speak about how it changed her life, I can understand why; English liberated her and she wants to liberate other Japanese!

Me, disagreeable? No!

The cultures behind the English language encourage finding your thoughts and feelings, your voice. Through conversation you can explore yourself and learn from others, a different point of view expands your awareness. English is not as agreeable as Japanese and that’s okay. You may disagree with me, so let’s have a conversation about that.

Students’ joy.

So, what has this got to do with the joy of learning?

Teach-learn-copy-repeat is rewarding when you don’t need to learn-copy-repeat anymore, that information is something you possess. You own that information through hard work, that’s a good feeling.

Being shown something new which expands the way you think and the way you do things is like seeing the world with new eyes. It widens your view and changes the angle from what you knew. It’s at least interesting and at most life changing, how exciting!

It’s you, not me.

So, what’s that got to do with the joy of teaching?

One of the things I like most about teaching (or facilitating English communication to Japanese people), is people using the skillset Masami and I have demonstrated. Seeing their personality come through interacting in English. Their thoughts, not ours. Their feelings, not ours. Their voice, not ours. What they are saying is their true selves. I may disagree, however, this will lead to an interesting conversation. The joy!
