Daily English Work-out Part 1

Tips for Learning / 学びのコツ

Masami does it every day with me, I do it all the time and I do it badly on occasion. Our students do it with both of us, what am I writing about? Practising English.

We encourage our students to regularly exercise; not their body, their English. It’s the same as any skill, it will improve with practice and incremental learning. As with any skill, it’s easy to get rusty or forget things if you don’t practice.

Me, myself, and I

Practising speaking English alone may seem strange at first, however, don’t give up. It will benefit any learning you have done either recently or from years ago. There may be an exercise you may enjoy below to help you.

Use everyday tasks to practice your English, not only will this find gaps in your vocabulary, you will also find topics that’s personal to you.

Planning your day

Plan your day in English, think about what your tasks are for the day and say that aloud in English. Use English that is at your level for example, “I will eat breakfast. I will go to work. I will go shopping. I will have a bath. I will go to bed.” Or, “I will have salmon, miso soup, rice and natto for breakfast, then go to work. After work, I shall do some grocery shopping, eat dinner, relax in the bath, and then go to bed.”

Say what you see

Again, using your level of English say what you see, for example, (Shopping at the supermarket) “Fruit, bananas, apples, satsumas, grapes, strawberries, fish, sushi, sashimi, pasta, rice…” Or, “Here’s the fruit and vegetable section; I like bananas, apples, and grapes but I’m allergic to satsumas, I don’t eat them.”

Doing a hobby

This can be impossible to use English when doing another hobby, can you play flute and speak at the same time? How about swimming? For hobbies, either explain what you do for your hobby and how you do it or, explain what you’re doing when you are doing it. For example, “I swim in the swimming pool.” Or, “On Wednesdays, I like to go swimming at the local swimming pool. I do some laps of the pool using breaststroke or backstroke.”

These are just three thing you can do to find gaps in your vocabulary and grammar, and to think and speak in English. Your brain and mouth need exercise to strengthen them; doing a daily English work-out will at least maintain whatever you are practising.
