Is “Why are you here?” a good question?

Awareness / アウェアネス

“Why are you here?” is a question I often hear from Japanese people. I understand it as an innocent question. The question is simple, to the point, but it’s rude. I am not at all offended nor do I think any less of the person asking me. In fact, I’m grateful for the interest and spoken English language.

The question, “Why are you here?” can be interpreted by a native English speaker as:

“Why are you here? (You don’t belong here.).”

“Why are you here? (Are you here to cause problems?).”

“Why are you here? (Shouldn’t you be doing something here!?).”

“Why are you here? (What is the purpose of your life?).”!!!

There are many ways to rephrase this question. My favourite phrase is, “What brought you to Japan?”. Although my urge to reply, “An aeroplane.” is always there, I rarely do. My answer to that question is to be with Masami.

What brought me to Japan.

Masami and I met by chance in England, we were at a bus stop, Masami was trying to read a bus timetable which I was sitting in front of. I could see that she was agitated so, I asked if she was okay. That was nine years ago, five years ago I came to Japan to be with her.

Funnily enough, what happened at that bus stop is what we teach. Not only do we teach English (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc.), but also how to start a conversation, express yourself and, respond to what’s being said.

あなたの心が伝わるあなただけの英語.

We are proud to say we have recently released a comprehensive, intensive English language programme for Japanese people, called,

あなたの心が伝わるあなただけの英語.

Although we call it a programme, it changes from one student to another. The end goal is the same but, the journey to get there is different for every student. We tailor-make each lesson to the student’s needs, abilities, and requirements.

Our goal is to facilitate the English learner to communicate in English. There are no exams or grades. The only tests are that you understand and you are understood. We guide you to get there.

There are many benefits to studying English as a second language, such as; improved memory, awareness of foreign culture, dementia prevention, to enjoy English media first hand, and so on.

I am sure Masami never thought gaining a husband was one of the benefits but starting a conversation at a bus stop in England is the reason why I am here in Japan.
