A Different Way to Learn English in Japan: Why We Facilitate, Not Teach

英語コミュニケーションプログラム

Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.

Our approach

Many English learners in Japan study for years but still feel unable to communicate confidently. This is often because traditional English education focuses on exams, accuracy, and repetition rather than real communication. Our approach is different.

Masami and I describe ourselves as English facilitators, not just teachers, because we believe meaningful learning happens when the student is actively involved. The student does the hard work, but our role is to guide, support, and simplify the difficult parts of English communication.

Why Traditional English Education in Japan Feels Difficult

In many Japanese schools, English learning follows a familiar pattern: listen, copy, repeat. This approach can be effective for passing exams, but it often leaves little room for experimentation, personal expression, or independent thinking.

While drilling and repetition are sometimes necessary, they are not enough on their own to develop practical English communication skills. Speaking a language requires decision-making, flexibility, and confidence—skills that cannot be memorised.

Learning English Without Exams: Communication as the Measure

Unlike formal education, we are fortunate to work without exams. There is no pass or fail on paper. Instead, the result is in the conversation itself.

When communication breaks down, that moment becomes the learning opportunity. We guide you through what happened and help you prepare for the next conversation. Some drilling is unavoidable—but it always serves a clear, practical purpose.

How You Actually Improve English Communication

Real improvement comes through personal effort, experimentation, and guided practice. Over time, learners often experience important moments of realisation—when things suddenly “click”.

These moments are powerful because you worked it out for yourself, with facilitation and support along the way. That understanding lasts far longer than memorised answers.

A Practical, Human Approach to English Learning in Japan

Our goal is simple: to make English communication accessible, achievable, and meaningful. Learning is still challenging—but it becomes purposeful, personal, and real.

If you are looking for an English learning approach in Japan that goes beyond exams and memorisation, facilitation may be what you’ve been missing.
