Trust Me, I’m an English Facilitator

English as a communication tool / ツールとしての英語

Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.

In the beginning…

“Hello. My name is Duncan Brown. I’m from the UK. I am a TEFL-qualified English Teacher. I have been living in Japan and helping Japanese people with their English communication since 2016. It’s nice to meet you.” That’s my standard self-introduction to all our students.

Knowledge is power

It’s good to know something about who is teaching, helping, advising, coaching, and supporting your English learning. However, the experience and qualifications of your teacher mean nothing if you don’t connect with them in some way.

Who we are

I think there is a huge amount of trust put in Masami and me from our students, especially from the people who are just starting with us. Many thoughts must arise, such as: Are they strict? Are they difficult? Can they help me? Can I trust them? Will I learn English from them? All valid questions for any English teacher.

On reflection, I know both Masami and I want to help people generally, but everyone is different. That’s why we have our free consultations, we want to know more about our potential student as a person and adapt our lessons accordingly.

Sharing is caring

In the first couple of lessons, we find out a little more about the student’s confidence and ability, and adapt further. As they progress, we modify the lesson again and again. Within the lessons, we discover more about each other through real English conversations; no wonder the relationship grows!

Because we are protective of our students’ privacy, the topics of conversation soon open up. Being aware of taboo topics is important, but to discuss them in a safe environment is not only interesting but also liberating. We want our students to express themselves in English in any way, from shallow small talk to deep discussions.

You can’t buy trust

Practising English without boundaries or fear of being judged encourages studying, discovering new words to say exactly what you think. The English language alone is an interesting subject, and to talk about topics that are important to you makes it more so.

I think learning a second language really broadens one’s horizons, discovering a different way to think and communicate. Of course, you can trust me, I’m an English Facilitator.
