Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
Work experience
Over the years, I have tried various jobs, and they weren’t always enjoyable for different reasons. My first paid job was a paper round when I was about thirteen years old. While I appreciated the exercise, I didn’t enjoy waking up early.
The lows…
After a few years, my family moved to different locations, and I unfortunately ended up in a town known for its high unemployment rate. Once I reached working age, I was thrilled to find any job that would pay my bills; I accepted whatever came my way, which led me to discover several roles I would not want to pursue long term.
The highs…
Eventually, I found a part-time temporary Christmas job in a different city, which I genuinely enjoyed. Although it didn’t pay well, it was fun. The majority of my colleagues were great, and the job was easy yet interesting and varied. At the end of the Christmas season, I was offered a full-time permanent position, as the management team was impressed with my attitude and abilities.
I accepted the job and continued to enjoy my work, gaining valuable experience and skills across various departments. Because of this, I caught the attention of the management team. I soon received a promotion; however, my job role changed for the worse, marking the beginning of a decline in my job satisfaction.
Saved from the depths
To cut a long story short, I received another promotion but left for a better-paying job. Unfortunately, that was when I discovered that there were much worse jobs out there. I realized I had made a mistake and admitted this to my old boss, who then said, “Come back!” So, I did.
A few years later, one of my colleagues made an interesting comment: “People who don’t enjoy their jobs aren’t very good at them.” While I don’t entirely agree with that statement, it makes sense that if you’re not interested, you’re not motivated. If you’re not motivated, you don’t care about doing a good job.
Enjoy what you do, do what you enjoy
Fortunately, I am now in a position that I enjoy immensely. Masami and I meet interesting people of all ages and abilities and help them with their English needs, making the learning process accessible, engaging, and fun. That’s what we’ve been told, anyway.
Your success is our satisfaction
I take pride in what we do and how we facilitate English learning and its practical use. So, if my old colleague’s statement holds any truth, our success is indeed tied to our job satisfaction.
