Hello. My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
How do you say..?
Have you ever wanted to say something in a language that you are learning but didn’t have the vocabulary to express yourself? Everybody who learns a language has had this experience and I’m sure it has happened in your native tongue, too.
Imagine a conversation is flowing in your second language, you give an opinion and follow up with “Argh, how do you say OO”. It doesn’t matter what level you are, the words you are looking for are forgotten, never learned, or most annoyingly, on the tip of your tongue but not coming out!
These are the words you learn
There are many techniques to remember new foreign words and they always require repeating them in one form or another. But, how do you find the missing words of your vocabulary before you talk yourself into a conversation stopper?
Many learn topics of related words, for example, greeting & departing (hello & goodbye), family members (husband, daughter…), job titles (teacher, student…), food (fruit, vegetables…), etc. These are the basic words that you are taught but not always what you want.
These are the words you want
In your first language, you are using the vocabulary for the subjects you are interested in whether it’s the weather or politics. The topics that you are interested in now are the learning material you want to learn and share in a second language. Now, you can focus on the vocabulary you want, one topic at a time.
Let’s say you mostly talk about music in your first language, this is the starting point to build upon.
“I like music” – Really like? Love?
“I love music” – Listen to? Play?
“I love listening to music” – What, where, why, who, when, which, how?
“I love listening to music, in my car, on the way to work. When I’m alone, I sing along to Phil Collins; I prefer his solo work compared to Genesis. My husband hates his music, so we listen to the radio when we drive anywhere together”
Sharing your interests
The question words will guide you to your missing vocabulary and grammar. We can expand a topic further with feelings and other connected information that is unique to you.
It may seem obvious to say, “Learn it to say it” but if you’re not going to use what is being learned, it’s boring work and not interesting to look into it. Learning what you want to say is a steady, simple, step-by-step process.
