Daily, we get all sorts of information in many different ways. We can receive this information using the passive language skills of reading or listening. Via TV, radio, books, newspapers, or the internet, we are being informed of something.
This information can be read or heard, think celebrity gossip or adverts for things you will not buy, and forgotten in the short-term. Alternatively, for the long term, think studying for an exam or training for a promotion, more energy and dedication are required to acquire that information.
Think long term
This leads to short-term memory and long-term memory. What is Taylor Swift doing? When is the next Leap Year? One of these answers is useful to me and, the other one isn’t.
Drilling it in
What was your weakest subject at school and what do you remember? For me it was French, I probably could say some set phrases but I clearly remember drilling French grammar. I never wanted to learn French nor do I use it but I still remember a few things because of the effort I put in. I know more about the French language than I do of Taylor Swift.
Repeat after me, “It works”
By putting the effort in through input (reading, listening) and output (writing, speaking) we are more likely to recall it. Using what has been learned regularly, is a lesson itself. Repetition at school is the only reason why I can recall any French. Repetition of something to reach your goals is slightly more motivating knowing that it works.
Better use of energy
No one can learn for you, it’s only you who can put the effort in. Missing a day of dedicated learning is another day to forget something. We are informed of something every day that takes effort and time with little to no benefit. Wouldn’t it be better to use that energy to learn every day?
