Success by Determination and Support - あなたの心を表現する英語を見つけるブログ

I often read articles related to learning or teaching as they are either interesting or useful. Recently, I read an interesting interview with an amazing man. The man is called, Jason Arday and as of March 2023, The University of Cambridge’s youngest black professor.

The title of the article reveals a little about his achievements, it reads, “Jason Arday: he learned to talk at 11 and read at 18 – then became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor” The link for the full article is below.

Diagnosed with autism as a child, Arday found his voice through speech therapy and his mother’s unflagging support. Now ...

As you can guess, he’s a person with many achievements to his name; two things that stand out to me about the article are, determination and support.

Determination

Determination is essential to make any gains in what you do: practice, practice, practice, try, try again.

I recently watched a sports event on TV and an athlete that came in fourth was interviewed. They were clearly upset about not getting a medal but said they will try harder next time. I thought about all the other runner-ups and thought why don’t they quit as they are not even close to winning? I admired their determination and guessed they were following their dreams, ambition, and taking part in something that they love.

Funnily enough, Masami’s English language journey is following her dreams, ambition, and taking part in something that she loves. She has talked about her trials and errors, and her determination is still strong as ever!

Support

Being determined to reach your goals and achieving them alone can either be difficult or impossible. Having someone there to guide, help, and enlighten you can make it less of a challenge and more of a revelation. Even enjoyable!

This is what Masami and I strive to do; support our students to be effective communicators in English. Learning English communication as a Japanese can be difficult and confusing. This is because what Masami and I demonstrate isn’t taught in school. We have been told we make it easier for learners to understand how to communicate in English, and highlight the differences between the cultures of both languages.
