How Do YOU Study English? – Group Lessons

Awareness / アウェアネス

I previously wrote about the pros and cons of learning English through self-studying and One-to-One lessons. Self-studying is essential however you choose to learn but can be enhanced with One-to-One lessons and/or Group lessons. So, are Group lessons suitable for you?

Mature learner

Everyone’s first experience of learning in a group is probably at school with strangers who are a bit difficult to work with, but that’s children for you. If you are like me, school was mostly a bad experience and I couldn’t wait to leave!

Being an adult learner, you are choosing to learn something you want to, unlike when you’re a child. You also have a choice of where to study, mostly on your terms. You learn or you don’t learn; that’s up to your motivation and dedication.

Group lessons

Like One-to-One lessons, many language schools offer group lessons at different price points. The positives and negatives are similar to One-to-One lessons, and the options of online or face-to-face classes, are available.

Group lessons advantages

The positives of Group lessons are:

  • having lessons with others is more motivating
  • building rapport with the group can make it enjoyable
  • you can ask any questions to help you
  • support from other students
  • costs less than One-to-One lessons
  • immediate practice speaking English with people other than the tutor

Group lessons disadvantages

The negatives of Group lessons are:

  • the materials are chosen for the class, not for you
  • you may need to pay for a long-term contract
  • you may not get the same tutor each time with big companies
  • lesson time is shared for practice or to ask questions
  • other classmates can dominate a class

Sharing the experience

Group lessons are a shared experience of not only the subject you’re learning but also the journey of learning something. “That was an interesting lesson.”, “I didn’t understand but the lesson ended before I could ask.”, “Did you do the homework?”! etc.

Using English as a tool, you can discover more about others and yourself; the culture of the language is to share and explore thoughts, ideas, and feelings. A classroom setting can be a safe environment to do that.
