There are many ways to study a language, last time I wrote about some of the advantages and disadvantages of studying English by yourself. Ultimately, self-study is essential to progress quicker, especially when learning a language. It is also good to exercise what you have learnt so you don’t forget it!
Self-study isn’t the only way to learn; One-to-One lessons are another way to gain, maintain, and improve your English. Whether it’s for fun, interest, work, or to keep your brain active there’s a class for you.
One-to-One lessons
There are many different language schools you can choose from; big companies, individual tutors, and small schools (like ours) can offer what you need to reach your targets. These lessons are available online or in person.
Choosing a school or teacher who is “right” for you is different for each person, however, in a one-to-one lesson you will quickly find out what works for you.
Advantages of One-to-One lessons
The positives of One-to-One lessons are:
- learning materials will suit your level
- advice is given on what and how to learn
- having regular lessons is more motivating
- building rapport with a tutor can make it enjoyable
- you can ask questions to help you
- learning can be as fast or as slow as you require
- usually, faster progress
- you’re the only student to have the teacher’s attention
Disadvantages of One-to-One lessons
The negatives of One-to-One lessons are:
- it can be expensive
- you may need to pay for a long-term contract
- you may not get the same tutor each time with big companies
- no conversation practice with other learners
- no other learners to share your English learning journey
These are only a few pros and cons of One-to-One lessons and you may think of more that relate to you. The comments on big companies are from what I have heard from some of our students and the research we have made.
Good value for you?
Overall, One-to-One lessons are a quick way to learn exactly what you need as you don’t have to follow a lesson plan to help anyone else but yourself. All the time is dedicated to your acquisition of the language and in lessons, there is theory, practice, and any corrections or directions are given. However, is the extra cost of One-to-One lessons worth those advantages?
To make the best use of One-to-One lessons, self-study is still needed. Next time, Group lessons.
