IN, ON, and AT are prepositions used in different contexts, which can be confusing. I have previously written how to use them with transport, location, times, and dates. This time it’s media and technology prepositions, ON and, AT.
As the internet is widely used, prepositions are used to show how we use it and other technologies.
For time media and technology, the guidelines are:
IN – Use IN for printed media
- IN a comic book, IN a newspaper, IN a magazine, IN a book
ON – Use ON for electronic media and technology
- ON the internet, ON social media, ON Facebook, ON a website
- ON television, ON the radio
IN and ON exceptions
Like other prepositions, these are just guidelines so there are a few exceptions, and context is also important. Look at the following –
Although e-mails are a type of technology, IN is used instead, like paper media, “IN an e-mail.”
“ON the news.” is used for TV or radio news and, “IN the news.” is used for newspapers and talking generally about current events.
Practice, practice, practice
IN, ON, and, AT are frequently used in many ways, which can be difficult at first but it is good for an English learner. It is good because to improve on anything that is difficult, practice is required. Being used frequently in conversation, you will get your practice!
