Common Mistakes When Speaking English

Awareness / アウェアネス

Getting something wrong when speaking English can be demotivating, especially after putting so much effort into learning, reviewing and using the language you’re learning. Mistakes happen and they are a process of learning so don’t be too hard on yourself.

English is one of the most difficult languages to learn for a Japanese person. Below is a list of common mistakes made in English.

Missing/wrong article

Missing/Wrong article – “a”, “an” or “the” are articles, these indicate, specify, and limit a noun. I ate apple., I ate an apple., I ate the apple., are not the same.

Plurals, countable, uncountable

Plurals – when to refer to more than one of something. I like chicken., is not the same as, I like chickens.

Countable/Uncountable words – the form of the word when using plurals. Countable: dog/dogs Uncountable: sheep/sheep

Verb tense

Verb tense – When in time an action is occurring or has occurred. Simple forms;

Past: It rained.  Present: It is raining (now). Future: It will rain (later).

Pronunciation

Pronunciation – the way a word is spoken. Some English sounds don’t exist in the Japanese language and the spelling of a word doesn’t always sound the same. Tough, cough, dough, bough, bought.

Grammar

Sentence structure – Simple English sentence structure is – subject, verb, object, whereas, simple Japanese sentence structure is – subject, object, verb.

These are just a few of the differences between Japanese and English languages, no wonder it is challenging! If you sometimes get things wrong, you’re not alone.

Learn from your mistakes

Being aware of your weaknesses should guide your studies rather than stop them. By knowing where you can make mistakes you can prevent them through lessons, study, and taking care when you speak.
