Is English like Maths or a Puzzle?

Grammar /文法

Grammar is the structure of any language and can be confusing or challenging when different from your native language. Basic Japanese language structure is, subject-object – verb (sov); basic English language is, subject – verb – object (SVO).

For example, “私は (subject) りんごを (object) すきです (verb)。”, and, “I (subject) like (verb) apples (object).”. Of course, there are other rules here, but looking at the basics it’s like maths, it has a formula; Japanese = sov, English = svo.

Alternatively, you can look at it like a puzzle; think of a sentence, what are the foreign words for that sentence, then, put the words in the correct order. Easy? Not quite, there are many more rules to learn.

After a while of learning and using these rules, it becomes second nature, what was once confusing now makes sense. Learning a second language will always be challenging; new words and grammatical structures are endless. Is English like maths, a puzzle, both or is it just English?
