Connecting the Practical Skills of English to Learning

Mindset / マインドセット

Previously I wrote about practical skills people have that can help when learning English. Essentially, some people are better at reading, writing, listening, or speaking. Using a skill that you’re good at can support a weaker one. You need at least two of these skills to begin to communicate in English.

Which skill do you want or need?

Depending on your needs or wants, two of the practical skills will be enough. If you have an English-speaking pen-friend or your work only involves emails in English, reading and writing skills are necessary, speaking and listening skills aren’t so important.

Alternatively, if you are face-to-face with an English speaker, speaking and listening skills are needed.

Recognize and use what you’re good at

When you discover what skill you’re good at or feel comfortable with, use it to improve another skill.

Good at reading? Use a textbook with a CD, read AND listen to improve your listening skill.

Good at writing? When writing anything, write AND read it aloud to support your speaking skill.

Good at listening? Use a textbook with a CD, listen AND read to improve your reading skill.

Good at speaking? When repeating a word aloud, say it AND write it down to help your writing skill.

Essential grammar

Additional to these practical skills, basic English grammar rules are needed, including; vocabulary (words), and sentence structure (word order). Once you know the chain (word order), you can replace a slot (a word) with new vocabulary to express different things.

English grammar is overwhelming, anyone can spend their whole life studying it. Perfect grammar isn’t essential, neither is basic grammar, however, that would cause a problem for good communication.

Support, support, support

The challenges of remembering vocabulary and using correct grammar can be supported by using what skill you are good at; plus, the secondary skill you are trying to improve. If you forget a word or grammar point using one skill, a supporting skill might help you remember. Overall, however you learn and whatever skill you are good at, you can improve your English learning.
